Roofing, Siding and Gutters in Asheville, NC

From hundred-year-old bungalows in Montford to new builds in Biltmore Park, we roof the houses within a few miles of our own front door.

Asheville is where Arolite Group is based. Our office is at 133 Church Street, downtown, and most of what we do is a short drive from it: the bungalows along Haywood Road in West Asheville, the Victorians and Craftsman houses of Montford, the brick ranches and split-levels of Haw Creek and Oakley, the larger lots up through North Asheville, and the subdivisions that fill the valley south through Arden and Biltmore Park.

That spread of housing is the first thing to understand about roofing here. A 1920s house in Montford may be on its fourth roof, and the two before it were often laid over each other instead of torn off, which hides the plank decking, the rot at the eaves and the flashing that was never replaced. A 2005 house in Biltmore Park has sound decking but a lot of valleys, dormers and intersecting gables, and those are where its shingles fail first. We price each of those jobs differently because they are different jobs.

The second thing is the trees. Asheville sits in a basin between the Blue Ridge and the Great Craggy range, and the canopy is dense right into the city. Oak leaves and pine needles pack gutters and hold moisture against shingles, and a dropped limb after a wind event is the single most common reason a homeowner calls us.

What We Do Most in Asheville

Roof Replacement

A full tear-off is the right call on most in-town houses that have reached a second or third layer. We strip to the deck, replace any soft plank or OSB, install new underlayment and ice protection on the slopes that need it, and finish with architectural shingles from manufacturers such as CertainTeed. The exterior consultant who inspected your roof is the one who prices it, in person.

Roof Repair

Not every leak means a new roof. On a lot of Asheville houses the problem is a chimney cricket that was never built, a pipe boot that has split or a valley that was woven badly, and the fix is a repair rather than a replacement. We tell you honestly which one you have, and we photograph it so you can see for yourself.

Storm Damage and Insurance

Wind down the French Broad corridor and tree strikes across the whole county are what bring most storm calls in. We tarp first if the house is open to weather, then document the damage in the format an adjuster expects and meet them on site if your carrier sends one. Helene in 2024 put a lot of Asheville homeowners through this for the first time, and the claim is something we walk through with you.

Siding

Older Asheville houses often have original wood siding that has been painted a dozen times, and a good portion of it is past saving at the bottom courses and around the windows. We replace it with house wrap and vinyl or fiber cement, flashed properly at every opening, and because the same company does the roof, the roof-to-wall details get done once and done right.

Everything else we do is on the services page.

Old Houses, Steep Streets and Tight Lots

Working in Asheville means working around the house as much as on it. Lots in West Asheville and Montford are narrow, the neighbor is fifteen feet away, and the driveway often will not take a dump trailer. We plan the tear-off so the debris goes straight into a container, we tarp the beds and the porch, and we clean up at the end of every day. Daily cleanup is something our customers mention in their reviews because it matters more on a small city lot than anywhere else.

The older stock also means older framing. Rafters on a hundred-year-old house were often cut from true two-by-fours, the decking is one-by boards with gaps, and chimneys were built without crickets. None of that is a reason to be alarmed and all of it is a reason the inspection comes first. Replacing bad boards and adding the flashing details that were skipped in 1925 is normal work for us, and it is written into the estimate up front rather than discovered on the day.

Weather in the Asheville Basin

Asheville sits at about 2,100 feet, lower than most of the surrounding county, and the basin holds humidity. Moss and algae streaking on north-facing slopes is common, and under a heavy canopy a shingle roof can stay damp for days after rain. Algae-resistant shingles and keeping the gutters clear make a real difference to how long a roof lasts here.

Winter brings freeze and thaw rather than deep snow. Water gets under a lifted shingle during the day, freezes at night and works the seal open a little further each time, which is why a roof that looked fine in October can leak at a dormer in February. Ice dams form on the shaded slopes above unheated porches. Ice and water protection at the eaves and valleys is worth specifying on any replacement in the city, and the inspection shows where your roof needs it.

Wind is the other factor. Gusts funnel down the French Broad and Swannanoa river valleys, and a roof on the open side of a ridge in North Asheville takes more of it than a house tucked into Haw Creek. We fasten to current North Carolina residential code and we pay attention to the ridge and the rakes, which is where wind damage starts.

Why Asheville Homeowners Call Us

  • We are from here. The office is downtown on Church Street and the crew lives in Buncombe County. After Helene the region filled up with out-of-area roofers, and a lot of people would rather hire someone they can drive past.
  • The inspection is free and the price is written. An exterior consultant gets on the roof, takes photos, then sits down with you in person and goes through an itemized estimate line by line.
  • One crew for roof, siding and gutters. On an older Asheville house the roof edge, the fascia, the top course of siding and the gutters all meet at the same spot, and one crew doing all of it means nobody blames the last trade for a leak.
  • Daily updates and daily cleanup. You hear from us every day the job is running, and the yard is clean when the truck leaves. Our reviews say so in our customers' own words.

Asheville Roofing Questions

My house in West Asheville is almost a hundred years old. Can you roof it?

That is a large part of what we do. Older Asheville houses often have plank decking, layered roofs and missing flashing details. The free inspection tells us what is under the shingles, and the estimate lists any decking replacement up front rather than adding it on the day.

Is the roof inspection really free, even inside the city?

Yes. An exterior consultant comes to the house, gets on the roof and photographs what they find, then goes through it with you in person. There is no charge, whether you hire us or not.

A tree came down on my roof after a storm. What should I do first?

Call us at (828) 818-8392. We will get the house covered first, then document the damage in the format your insurance company expects and work through the claim with you. Storm and tree damage is one of the most common calls we get in Buncombe County.

Can you do the siding and gutters at the same time as the roof?

Yes. Roofing, siding and gutters are our core services, and one crew handles all of them. Doing them together on an Asheville house means the roof edge, fascia and gutters are built as one system instead of three separate visits.

Do you offer financing for a roof in Asheville?

Yes, we offer financing. Your exterior consultant can walk you through the options when they bring the estimate. Our office hours are Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

What Our Customers Say

Reviews left by Arolite Group customers on Google, Facebook and Angi, shown word for word.

These guys are great. I had a roof done about 2 months ago due to wind damage. They came, removed the old roof, installed a new better roof and cleaned up all within 1 day. The owner was extremely pleasant and wasn't trying to sell you something. He was to the point. Direct. And honest. I told him what I needed and he found the option that worked best for me. All within a 2 week lead time. I have had no issue with the roof since and they did it right the first time.

I would recommend highly recommend Arolite Group to anybody. They are outstanding roofers but that's not all. When they came by to quote on our roof, they also quoted on interior painting and the repair of our master bathroom. They essentially provided project management on those components and coordinated their work with a couple of other specialty trades. They put our job to the top of the list, and communicated effectively throughout our job. Jeff and Hayden are customer focused and communicate very effectively!

Donn Kolbeck · Google review

It was a pleasure to work with this company. Jeff Smith and Hayden Mitchell were knowledgeable, professional and helpful. They worked with us to achieve the look we wanted while considering our budget. They installed new windows and applied vinyl siding on our home. We are very pleased with the end result and would use Arolite Group again.
