Roofing Contractor in Haywood County, NC

Higher, colder and snowier than Asheville, with cabins that need a roof built for ice and valley towns that have seen two floods in four years.

Haywood County starts where the Buncombe line crosses I-40 west of Asheville and runs up to the Tennessee state line and the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains. Waynesville is the county seat and the biggest town, half an hour from our office along US-23/74. Canton and Clyde sit on the Pigeon River along I-40, Lake Junaluska fills the valley between Clyde and Waynesville, and Maggie Valley is the resort strip on US-19 that climbs toward Soco Gap and Cherokee.

Elevation is what separates roofing here from roofing in Asheville. Downtown Waynesville sits roughly 600 feet higher than downtown Asheville and the cabins above Maggie Valley are higher still, which means more snow, longer stretches below freezing, and ice that sits on a north slope for weeks. A roof that would be fine in Arden can fail early on a Haywood County ridge, so we spec differently up here and we say so in the estimate.

The towns each have their own character and we have a page for the two people ask about most. Waynesville is the historic county seat, with a Main Street district and older neighborhoods on the hills around it. Maggie Valley is cabins, chalets and second homes, a lot of them owned by people who are not there when the roof starts leaking. Canton and Clyde are mill-town and farm-valley housing along the Pigeon, and the newer subdivisions have pushed out along US-19/23 toward the county line.

Our Haywood County Services

Standing Seam Metal Roofing

Standing-seam metal is the roof we are asked about most in Haywood County, and for good reason. Snow slides off it instead of sitting in a drift against the chimney, it does not care how long the north slope stays frozen, and on a cabin that goes empty for weeks at a time it is the roof least likely to be a surprise when you get back. We install it on new decking with a proper underlayment and we price it side by side with shingle so you can see the real gap.

Storm Damage and Insurance

Haywood County has taken two major floods in four years, Fred in 2021 and Helene in 2024, and the wind and falling timber that came with them reached well above the river. If a tree has come through the roof or a wind gust has peeled a section at the ridge, we cover the opening first and then document everything the way your insurance adjuster will want to see it.

Roof Replacement

A shingle replacement in Haywood County gets more ice and water protection than one in the valley, and it gets a hard look at ventilation, because a poorly vented attic under a snow load is what builds the ice dams that lift shingles at the eaves. We strip to the deck, replace soft boards, and lay new underlayment before a single shingle goes on.

Free Roof Inspection

If you own a second home in Maggie Valley or above Waynesville and you are not there every week, an inspection before winter is the cheapest insurance you will buy. An exterior consultant gets on the roof, photographs the flashing, the ridge and the valleys, and sends you the findings whether or not there is anything to fix.

Everything else we do is on the services page.

Snow, Ice and the North Slope

The weather pattern that does the damage in Haywood County is not one big storm. It is a wet snow that half melts on a sunny afternoon, refreezes overnight at the eaves, and does it again the next day for a week. Water backs up behind the ice and under the shingles, and the first sign is a stain on the ceiling of a bedroom that faces the mountain. The slopes that see the least sun are the ones to worry about, and on a lot of Maggie Valley cabins that is the whole back of the house.

Metal handles that cycle better than shingle, which is why so much of the county has gone that way, but it needs snow guards above doors and decks and it needs the panels to run clean from ridge to eave. A shingle roof can be built for it too, with ice protection well past the eave line and the attic vented so the deck stays cold. Either way, the plan starts with where the snow sits on your particular roof, and that is what the inspection is for.

Access and Working in the Mountains

Access is the other thing that shapes a Haywood County job. A cabin at the end of a gravel switchback above Jonathan Creek is not a place you can park a thirty-yard container, so we plan how the tear-off comes down and how the panels or bundles go up before the crew arrives. Weather windows matter too. We watch the forecast above 3,000 feet differently than we do for Asheville, and we will not open a roof the day before a front comes through.

Canton and Clyde bring a different set of jobs. The housing along the Pigeon River and in the older mill neighborhoods is mostly mid-century, with lower pitches and a lot of additions, and the flood years left tree damage and deferred repairs that are only now being dealt with. We do a lot of straightforward shingle replacements there, and the gutter and siding work that comes with them.

Why Haywood County Calls Arolite Group

  • We install metal and shingle, and we price both. A lot of roofers in the mountains do one or the other. We put both numbers on your own roof so the decision is yours and not the contractor's.
  • We know what Fred and Helene did here. Flood years leave roof damage that shows up long after the water is gone. We look for it on every Haywood County inspection, and we document it for your insurer when it is there.
  • A free inspection, with photos you keep. Especially for a second home. The exterior consultant gets on the roof, records what they find and sends it to you wherever you are. If it is fine, we tell you it is fine.
  • An in-person price, not a number over the phone. An exterior consultant sits down with you, or meets you at the cabin, and goes through an itemized estimate. Financing is there if you want it.

Haywood County Roofing Questions

Do you cover all of Haywood County or just Waynesville?

All of it. Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Canton, Clyde, Lake Junaluska and the cabins above them are all regular territory for us. Our office is in downtown Asheville, about half an hour from Waynesville along US-23/74.

Is metal or shingle the better roof for a cabin in Maggie Valley?

It depends on the roof, the trees and how long you plan to keep the place. We install both, and after the free inspection the exterior consultant prices both on your own roof so you can compare them side by side rather than take anyone's word for it.

I only visit my Haywood County house a few times a year. Can you inspect it while I am away?

Yes. An exterior consultant can get on the roof, photograph what they find and send you the findings and the written estimate without you being there. The inspection is free.

A tree hit my roof in Canton during a storm. Will you work with my insurance company?

Yes. Storm and tree damage with an insurance claim is one of the most common jobs we do. We cover the opening first, document the damage the way the adjuster expects it, and go through the claim with you. Call (828) 818-8392.

Can I finance a new roof in Haywood County?

Yes. We offer financing options, and the exterior consultant can walk you through them when they bring the estimate. We are open Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

What Our Customers Say

Reviews left by Arolite Group customers on Google, Facebook and Angi, shown word for word.

I would recommend highly recommend Arolite Group to anybody. They are outstanding roofers but that's not all. When they came by to quote on our roof, they also quoted on interior painting and the repair of our master bathroom. They essentially provided project management on those components and coordinated their work with a couple of other specialty trades. They put our job to the top of the list, and communicated effectively throughout our job. Jeff and Hayden are customer focused and communicate very effectively!

It was a pleasure to work with this company. Jeff Smith and Hayden Mitchell were knowledgeable, professional and helpful. They worked with us to achieve the look we wanted while considering our budget. They installed new windows and applied vinyl siding on our home. We are very pleased with the end result and would use Arolite Group again.
