Roofing Contractor in Buncombe County, NC

Past the Asheville city limits: river valleys still recovering from Helene, ridge-top subdivisions in the wind, and farmhouses at the end of a long gravel drive.

Buncombe County is our home county, and most of it is not Asheville. North of the city, Woodfin follows the French Broad River and Weaverville sits on the I-26 corridor toward Madison County. To the east, I-40 climbs the Swannanoa valley through Swannanoa to Black Mountain and Montreat. Fairview spreads across the hills to the southeast along US-74A, Arden and Skyland fill the I-26 corridor to the south, and Candler, Enka and Leicester run west and northwest toward the Haywood and Madison lines.

The roofs out here look different from the ones inside the city. There are fewer century-old bungalows and more 1970s ranches, split-levels and farmhouses, along with the large subdivisions that went up around Weaverville, Arden and Candler from the 1990s on. Many of those newer houses are on their first replacement now, with original builder-grade shingles that have reached the end of their life at the same time as everyone else's on the street.

For homes inside the city itself, our Asheville page covers the in-town housing, the old decking and the tight lots. This page is about everything else in the county: the valleys, the ridges and the long driveways, all within about half an hour of the office on Church Street.

What Buncombe County Homeowners Call Us For

Storm Damage and Insurance

Helene hit the Swannanoa valley, Fairview and the French Broad corridor harder than almost anywhere in the region in September 2024, and roof damage from that storm is still turning up on houses that were never properly inspected afterward. If a limb came through, a section lifted at the ridge or a ceiling stain appeared in the months since, we inspect it, cover it if it is open, and document it the way your insurance adjuster expects.

Roof Replacement

The subdivisions around Weaverville, Arden and Candler are full of houses on their original roof, and twenty-plus years of mountain weather is about what builder-grade shingle gives you. We strip to the deck, replace soft sheathing, put down new underlayment with ice protection at the eaves and valleys, and finish with architectural shingles. The estimate shows every line, and an exterior consultant goes through it with you in person.

Gutter Services

Out in the county the tree cover is heavier and the lots are bigger, so gutters fill faster and overflow into foundations that sit on a slope. We hang seamless gutters sized for the runoff off a steep roof, pitch them so they actually drain, and put the downspouts where the water can get away from the house.

Standing Seam Metal Roofing

Standing-seam metal is a common choice on the farmhouses and outbuildings around Leicester, Barnardsville and Fairview, and more homeowners in the newer subdivisions are asking about it after Helene. We install both metal and shingle, and we price both on your own roof so the comparison is honest.

Everything else we do is on the services page.

River Valleys, Ridges and the Wind Between Them

Buncombe County is a set of river valleys separated by ridges, and where a house sits decides what its roof deals with. The Swannanoa and French Broad valleys collect fog and moisture, so north-facing slopes there stay damp and grow moss and algae faster than you would expect. Houses on the ridges above Fairview, Reems Creek or Candler take the wind instead, and wind damage almost always starts at the same places: the ridge cap, the rakes and the first course of shingles at the eave.

Freeze and thaw does the slow damage. A winter in the county is a long run of nights below freezing and days above it, and every cycle works water a little further under a lifted shingle or a cracked pipe boot. That is why a roof can come through a storm looking fine and start leaking at a vent in February. Ice and water protection at the eaves and valleys is part of every replacement we quote here.

After Helene

Two years on, Helene is still part of most roofing conversations in this county. Swannanoa, Black Mountain, Fairview and the communities along the French Broad saw flooding, landslides and wind-thrown timber, and a lot of roofs were tarped quickly and then never looked at again once the tarp came off. Some of those houses have damaged decking or flashing under shingles that look fine from the driveway.

The storm also brought a wave of out-of-area contractors, and many homeowners are wary of anyone knocking on doors. We are a local company with an office in downtown Asheville. The inspection is free, the exterior consultant gets on the roof and photographs what is there, and if the roof is sound we tell you so.

Getting to the job matters out here as well. A farmhouse up a gravel drive in Leicester or a home at the top of a switchback in Fairview needs the tear-off and the delivery planned before the crew arrives, so we look at access during the inspection and build it into the schedule. Roofing, siding and gutters are all done by the same company, so a house that needs more than a roof is one job, not three contractors.

Why Buncombe County Calls Arolite Group

  • Our home county. The office is on Church Street in Asheville, and anywhere in Buncombe County is a short drive. You are hiring a contractor you can find again next year.
  • We look for what Helene left behind. Hidden storm damage is part of every inspection we do in the valleys. When it is there we document it for your insurer, and when it is not we tell you that too.
  • The inspection is free and comes with photos. An exterior consultant gets on the roof, photographs the ridge, the flashing and the valleys, and walks you through it. You keep the photos whether or not you hire us.
  • A written price, in person. The estimate is itemized and an exterior consultant goes through it with you at the house. Financing is available if you want to spread the cost.

Buncombe County Roofing Questions

Do you work outside Asheville in the rest of Buncombe County?

Yes. Weaverville, Woodfin, Swannanoa, Black Mountain, Fairview, Arden, Skyland, Candler, Enka and Leicester are all regular territory for us. Our office is on Church Street in downtown Asheville, so most of the county is within about half an hour.

My roof was tarped after Helene and nobody has looked at it since. Should I have it inspected?

Yes. A roof that was patched in a hurry after the storm can have damaged decking or flashing under shingles that look fine from the ground. The inspection is free, the exterior consultant photographs what they find, and if there is storm damage we document it for your insurance company.

My house in Arden still has its original roof. Is it time to replace it?

If the house went up in the 1990s or 2000s and the shingles have never been replaced, it is worth an inspection. We will tell you honestly whether a repair buys it a few more years or whether it is past that point, with photos so you can see for yourself.

Can you get equipment up a long gravel driveway?

Usually, yes. We look at the access during the free inspection and plan how the old roof comes off and the new materials go up before the crew arrives, so the schedule accounts for it.

Do you do siding and gutters in Buncombe County too?

Yes. Roofing, siding and gutters are our core services. When a house needs more than one of them, the same company handles all of it, so the roof edge, the fascia and the gutters are built together.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We offer financing options for roofing, siding and gutter projects, and your exterior consultant can walk you through them when they bring the written estimate. Call (828) 818-8392, Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
